Extreme Temperatures - Why Eczema Hates Bitter Winters and Humid Summers

Everyone has a favorite season. It might be the fall when the leaves are red, yellow, and beautiful. Or the spring, when new life is growing everywhere. If you are an eczema sufferer, your favorite probably isn’t the winter or summer. When it is extremely cold and dry, or swelteringly hot, the temperature can cause skin irritation that can lead to a worsening of eczema flare-ups.

Winter

During the wintertime, many people experience chapped lips because of the freezing temperatures and dry air. Now, just imagine what that would be like for someone who sufferers from eczema, especially on their face?
Humidity and moisture are necessary components of healthy skin. Without them, a flare-up can get even worse. In the winter, dry air can cause dry skin, even when you are safe and warm inside. Using a humidifier at night can help keep the air in your room moist, giving your skin a chance to heal. For eczema children, this is especially effective when combined with Wet Wrap Therapy and our Eczema Rescue Suits.

Moisturizer in the wintertime is your friend, especially when applied to places where the skin will be exposed to the elements, like the face and hands. By using an Eczema-Safe Moisturizer, you can better protect them from the cold weather while moisturizing them at the same time. If you really want to protect the hands, you could use our Eczema Gloves for Children and Adults to do Dry Wrap Therapy during the day when you are out and about.Summer

The summer tends to be far more humid than the winter, meaning that moisture shouldn’t be a big issue. The big issue in the summertime is the heat.
Summertime activities can cause people to sweat, and this can be a problem for eczema sufferers. While the sweating by itself is harmless, the salt is not. When your sweat dries, the salt remains on your skin, pulling even more moisture out of it while also causing irritation. Sweating itself also gets rid of moisture, further drying out your skin.
Since sweating is natural, the only real solution is to keep well hydrated. Drink lots of water throughout the day. After periods where you have sweat heavily, like playing sports, take a very quick, cool shower to get rid of the salt and maybe even cool off!
In both winter and summer, not to mention fall and spring, Wet Wrap Therapy with our Eczema Wraps can be a great way to manage eczema flare ups.
