Eczema and Spring Allergies - 3 Tips to Enjoy the Season

Spring is here!

Most people welcome the warm weather and sunny days of spring. But spring has a dark side. Just ask allergy sufferers. They know that spring is one of the worst seasons for those who have environmental sensitivities. Many of them anticipate weeks of red, itchy eyes and runny noses. But those are allergy sufferers. Do eczema sufferers also have to fear spring sensitivities?

Eczema is part of a trio of conditions called the Atopic Triad. They are three inflammatory illnesses that tend to come together: asthma, hay fever, and eczema. Having one of these illnesses increases the likelihood of having or developing the other two. This is why eczema can be a good early warning system for childhood asthma. The Atopic Triad means that spring might be very hard on children with eczema. Suffering from constant allergies may also mean an eczema flare-up. Runny noses, watery eyes, and eczema can mean a miserable spring.

One possible solution to the allergy problem is to use antihistamines to help control symptoms. Antihistamines do not alleviate eczema symptoms, but they may improve your physical comfort. Keep in mind that allergy medications can have side effects such as drowsiness. They may not be suitable for all ages. Be sure to consult a doctor before administering antihistamines or other allergy medications.

An air purifier can be a lifesaver for those with spring allergies. A powerful one can help remove allergens such as pollen and spores from the air. If your home heating and air do not include an air purifying system, you may want to buy a good quality purifier for each room you frequent.

Also, be sure to use an allergy-friendly filter for your furnace. Remember to change it regularly. When the weather warms, use the air conditioner as much as possible. Sweat can aggravate eczema. The air conditioner also filters out pollen, dust, and other eczema triggers.

In spite of all precautions, your child still may have a springtime eczema flare-up brought on by allergens. If so, take all the normal eczema safeguards. Be sure to moisturize their skin during the day and dress them in somewhat loose-fitting cotton clothing to allow their skin to breathe. Always rinse off after being outside. Before bed, use wet wraps with AD RescueWear eczema clothing to soothe irritated skin and bring down itchy inflammation. Below is a diagram on wet wraps for eczema.

Spring should be a time to be celebrated, not feared. Keep your children as allergy-free as possible with antihistamines, try to control the air inside your house through air purifiers, and address eczema flare-ups with Wet Wrap Therapy. Enjoy the spring while you can, because summer is coming up fast!
